ABOUT THE ARTISTS

MARKUS REUTER
Markus Reuter is a German multi-disciplinary musician, composer, record producer and instrument designer. His work as recording artist, solo performer and collaborator spans (and frequently fuses) electrophonic loop music, contemporary classical music, progressive and art rock, industrial music, world jazz, jazz fusion, pop songs and pure improvisation.

Over the course of a two-decade career, Reuter has been a member of multiple bands, ensembles and projects (including centrozoon, Stick Men, Tuner, The Crimson ProjeKct and Europa String Choir) as well as a solo artist. Since 2011 he has begun to establish himself as a contemporary classical composer, starting with the performance and recording of his large-scale orchestral piece Todmorden 513.

A specialist in touch guitar playing, Reuter became known as a leading player of the Warr Guitar and Chapman Stick during the 1990s and 2000s before developing and marketing his own U8 and U10 Touch Guitar instruments. In collaboration with former King Crimson member Trey Gunn, he runs the Touch Guitar Circle, a teaching and support network for touch guitar players.

He is also part of an artist-owned production consortium which encompasses Iapetus Media, Unsung Productions and Unsung Records.
Markus has recorded two albums with Tim Motzer (2010) Descending, and (2016) Space is the Place.http://1krecordings.com/markus-reuter-tim-motzer-space-is-the-place/ Motzer/Reuter are currently set to release their 3rd album, TBA, on 1k recordings later this summer.

With Mark Wingfield, Markus has recorded two albums, Lighthouse, and The Stonehouse (2017) released on MoonJune.

MARK WINGFIELD
One of the new guitar heroes of the 21st Century, British guitarist Mark Wingfield has already amassed a sizeable (and diverse) discography in the past decade. But it’s been his more recent work with MoonJune Records where he’s really opened up to show just how truly capable he is as a linear thinker, a sonic conceptualist and harmonic idealist, most notable in the all-improv contexts of 2017 Lighthouse (with Markus Reuter and Asaf Sirkis) and The Stone House (with Markus Reuter, Yaron Stavi and Asaf Sirkis). On his stellar 2016 trio date (with Yaron Stavi and Asaf Sirkis), Proof of Light, Wingfield also demonstrated his mettle as a composer and bandleader, creating memorable compositions that sound like nothing that’s been heard before, fusing elements of fusion and progressive rock with a surprising penchant for melodic ideation. With his new studio album Tales From The Dreaming City, Wingfield builds upon Proof of Light’s many successes and innovations with another trio date where his staggering technical acumen is on full display while, at the same time, always serving the music.

TIM MOTZER
Philadelphia guitarist/improviser/composer Tim Motzer lives in a technicolor world of music. He is known for his textural guitar voice utilizing bowing, electronics, and prepared techniques. After 20 years of world touring, stunning collaborations, and 80+ albums of credits, he continues to traverse manifold territories in music. From 2016-2018 Tim toured the world playing 43 concerts and festivals with Bandit65, an improvising trio he co-leads with guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel and drummer Gintas Janusonis. He has recorded/performed with numerous musical luminaries: David Sylvian, Burnt Friedman, Jaki Liebezeit (Can), Ursula Rucker, King Britt, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Markus Reuter, and Pat Mastelotto among others. Motzer also creates live solo scores for modern dance—most recently to sold out houses in Philadelphia; Tokyo, Japan; Seoul, South Korea; Oujda, Morocco; and Toronto, Canada. He composes for film and video, and is a composer/accompanist for University of the Arts Dance in Philadelphia. As a leader, his projects include Orion Tango, Instant Takemitsu, and Tim Motzer SOLO. He releases his solo work and collaborations on 1k Recordings. Currently, Motzer is in residency at Arete Venue in Brooklyn curating experimental improvisational concerts with musical luminaries.

DOUG HIRLINGER
Doug Hirlinger is a multifaceted musician whose diverse history includes extensive experience as a drummer, composer, educator, and producer. He possess a fascination with the synthesis
of technology and music and increasingly works with the cutting edge software known as Max/MSP, both as a compositional tool and interfaced with acoustic drums for performance. Doug’s
first musical language and point of reference is Jazz, due primarily to his upbringing in StLouis where he had the great fortune of working with and receiving tutelage from local tenor
saxophone legend, Wille Atkins. The rhythm, sonic fabric, swagger, and general artistry of hiphop
from the 80’s and 90’s has also been a significant inspiration. Since first moving to NewYork City in 1995, Doug has been a resident of both NYC and Philadelphia multiple times, moving from one city to the other more than once, immersing himself in the deep and rich
music scenes of both communities.

Doug has recorded with both Reuter and Motzer on the album Descending, which also features Pat Mastelotto, BJ Cole, and Theo Travis. Doug is also part of a new group with Motzer and John Swana which will release a new album on 1k this fall.
