Brooklyn — Arete Venue and Gallery will present Texture and Motion, a pop-up exhibition of guitarist Tim Motzer’s abstract works on canvas, Friday March 2nd thru Sunday March 11th in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York. The pop-up will also consist of a series of concerts featuring performances by Motzer on guitar and electronics along with guest artists violinist Charlotte Munn-Wood, pianist Melinda Faylor, and percussionist Jeremy Carlstedt.

‘Texture and Motion’ features new works on canvas by guitarist/painter Tim Motzer, and it is his first gallery exhibition in New York. Motzer is widely known as an innovative guitarist, composer, and improviser who has toured extensively internationally over the last 20 years, carving out a distinctive textural guitar voice utilizing looping, bowing, electronics, and prepared techniques. Along side his solo work, his music projects include Orion Tango, Instant Takemitsu (on his 1k Recordings label); and collaborations with David Sylvian, Burnt Friedman, Jaki Liebezeit of Can, Ursula Rucker, and King Britt among others. In 2016-2018 he worked with improvising trio Bandit65 featuring guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel and drummer Gintas Janusonis throughout Japan, UK, Europe, Scandinavia, and the United States.

As a painter, Motzer’s work delves into the abstract offering some insight into his music. His works are heavily layered and textural, in many ways illustrating visually what his music may look like.

“My goal is to express visually what I hear in my music. As I improvise with guitar—sonic texture, atmosphere, landscape, motion, harmonic color, and line all come together to form the whole. I recognize a similar direction in my painting—collisions, accidents, and densities of color, motion, decay, dream-like states, mystery, and space. I am exploring this approach within my paintings, as one medium reflects the other. Within both, I am searching the unknown for beauty, magic, and a sense of wonder.”

“I think my paintings have been influenced also by my world travels; these works somehow take on a sense of place to me. Each piece, while connected to one another, contains a distinct cultural memory.  My music has this quality as well. It is inspired by where I am, the constant movement, the sights and sounds, and the presence of the people that i am near. With my painting, I work in solitude, and the work is improvised over a short time. I am sure sub-conscious memory, instinct, and emotion play a role in the immediateness of the process. I think through the blur of my life, all of these experiences bubble to the surface as a burst of expression.”

Melinda Faylor, gallery director and pianist, says that Arete “is excited to present Tim Motzer’s large scale works. Mr. Motzer will be here for all three days creating an immersive experience of his artistry by performing while surrounded by his own visual artwork. He will also have limited edition hand painted and signed CD’s available of his recent recordings, as well as a limited number of small works on paper.”

The Arete Venue and Gallery is located on the first floor of 67 West Street #103, Brooklyn.
