My Music Year in Review 2012
Notes From the Road
My Music Year in Review 2012
It’s truly been an amazing year of music. I’ve only now begun reflecting on my year. and in doing so wanted to share a few of the highlights. I’ve been working hard all year creating new work, scoring soundtracks, playing, touring, driving & traveling, hosting artists, and recording our live concerts, doing multimedia shows, and collaborating with dancers. I even had my first photography exhibition this year! It’s an honour to work and collaborate with so many great artists and friends. It means more to me every year.
Below are links to audio and video clips from concerts, and new 1k music that you can enjoy. Dig deeper in if you like for more information. I am excited about all the new releases on 1k this year: Jeremy Carlstedt, Nucultures, Global illage, and Ilsar-Motzer. You are invited to listen, watch, enjoy, download, and buy some physical editions.
As always thank you so much for your support over the years.
Happy New Year!
Tim Motzer
Solo guitar+electronics
I have been playing more and more solo guitar shows; live scores with dancers; and some with visual installations. I plan on doing more of these shows in 2013 with one show already planned for May 2013 at the Rotunda in Philadelphia. In this light, please enjoy an audio clip from a 3 hour solo guitar & electronics recording from the Commotion Festival that included a 9 screen visual installation this past August. I am planning to release an album ‘Live From Crescent Park’ from that evening of wonder. Here is a track taken from that concert “may our dreams still fly’.
Beyond that, watch “Night Mosaic” live solo guitar + electronics with the amazing visuals of Dejha Ti.
Union Rags Documentary
In the summertime, I scored a documentary about Kentucky Derby Race horse ‘Union Rags’ owned by the Wyeth Family. It’s a wonderful story. Enjoy.
Instant Takemitsu
In March of 2012, the result of meeting Dino J.A. Deane at the Punkt Festival in Kristiansand, Norway in 2010, we booked shows and radio performances on the East Coast and played Roulette in Brooklyn, Sonic Circuits at the Pyramid Atlantic Silver Spring, MD, the Rotunda in Philadelphia, and at WPRB radio in Princeton, NY as well as an amazing 1k Session webcast.
This multimedia trio had instant chemistry, and we are shopping our first release, “Small Magic”, to labels now as an audio release but more importantly as a multimedia release featuring Dejha Ti’s improvised visuals. More on this soon!
Go to the Instant Takemitsu website and explore the video clips there from Sonic Circuits, the Rotunda, and Roulette concerts plus an entire 1k session webcast replay. We plan on doing festivals, and installations in 2013. Here’s a clip from our performance at Roulette in Brooklyn.

MST = MOTZER, SLICK, TI
i had the pleasure to tour with Julie Slick, and Dejha Ti driving down to Virginia and West Virginia in September playing 4 multimedia shows in Richmond, Charlotte, and Charleston. We had a blast! Some amazing music, visuals, and good times happened at these shows. Have a look at the website and check out 2 clips from our NorthStar date in Philadelphia. We have incredible recordings and video from our tour, so look for that surfacing soon, and hopefully some more tour dates in ’13.

Julie Slick-Terroir
Julie has an amazing new solo album ‘Terrior’ that i had the pleasure to write and play some music on. It was great to do and features some of my favorite musos Adrian Belew, David Torn, Pat Mastelotto, Marco Minnemann, Eric Slick, and more with amazing playing throughout—so I am thrilled to be a part of it and highly recommend you download or buy a physical edition ASAP! The amazing cover design, sculpture, photography is by Dejha Ti, and there’s a limited edition signed poster available. A few remain. better hurry!

The UMLAUT tour w Bernhard Woerstheinrich, Dejha Ti, & Tim Motzer
In early October electronic artist Bernhard traveled to Philly via Gutersloh, Germany to team up with me and Dejha Ti for an east coast tour that included Orion Studios in Baltimore, Stars End at WXPN in Philly, Music For Space at WPRB in Princeton, the Rotunda show in Philly, and finally the Nazareth Center for the Arts.
Check out this video from the Rotunda show, perhaps, our best performance of the tour.
We finished the tour with video and recordings from 5 performances, and look to release some of these in 2013.
Ursula Rucker RetroRewind European Tour 2012
with Tim Motzer and Gintas Janusonis
In late October i flew to Europe with Ursula Rucker for 9 shows. We’ve been at it for 12 years now. Quite amazing.
It was an intense tour as we played our first 6 shows in 6 days, flying everyday with about 3 hours of sleep per night, but such incredible and profound shows. Highlights included the Belgrade Jazz Festival in Serbia (SRO); our show at the Berghain Kantine in Berlin (where Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon wailed next door) with friends Kurt Rosenwinkel, Bernhard Woerstheinrich, hiphop legends Jeru the Damaja, & Sadat X in the audience, (we totally rocked!); in Vienna, Austria we played a special 2 set show at Porgy and Bess with trombonist Philip Yaeger joining us; and it was our first time in Madrid, Spain—a very special date. They all were very special shows, and we hope we can go back to Europe again very soon. We finished the year out with a full band concert at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia.
2012 Dance
I am totally enjoying creating music for dance. It’s been wonderful collaborating with the dancers, musicians, and teachers/choreographers at uArts. I am very happy playing/composing there, and have been part of some superb works this year with choreographers Curt Haworth, Brian Sanders, Manfred Fischbeck, and the Group Motion Dance Company. I am looking forward to presenting my music in an upcoming work in Toronto with dancer/choreographer Peggy Davis early in 2013.
New 1k Recordings Releases
excerpt from 15 Questions interview with Anil Prasad (Guitar Player Magazine, Innerviews)
“Tim Motzer, a brilliant, adventurous artist based in Philadelphia, is someone all of your readers should know about. He’s a superb composer and guitarist who criss-crosses multiple musical universes, including jazz, fusion, prog, hip-hop, soul, electronica, and the avant-garde. He runs the 1k Recordings label, which has an incredible catalog of genre-defying releases that deserve a far wider audience.”
