About the Session

Percussionist Alon Ilsar and guitarist Tim Motzer met in Sydney Austrailia in 2005. Alon’s subsequent visit to the States in 2010 yielded: Ilsar-Motzer : Tales of the Blackwinged Bird, on 1k Recordings, an album of exceptional beauty, wonder, and experimentalism utilizing percussion, guitar, and electronics.

The 1k Session will be their first live performance in front of a studio audience in Lancaster, Pennsylvania at the SugarTank Studio. Musically, it will begin where the record left off, a music of searching and wonder, broken rhythms and sublime textures. Techniques used to create the Ilsar-Motzer album artwork will be re-created live by Dejha Ti; live capture of blowing and manipulating ink will be ingested for further processing through her laptop and projection mapped to irregular shaped surfaces. The performance will be captured in HD for broadcast and release on 1k Sessions as Episode 17.

About the Artists

Alon Ilsar, based in Sydney, Australia is an electronic producer, experimental percussionist, composer, improviser, and musical instrument designer. He is currently doing a practice-based research PhD at UTS in designing a new interface for electronic percussionists called the AirSticks which he has been touring with around Europe, the UK, Israel, and the US. Ilsar is heavily involved as a composer, sound designer, and drummer for theatre, the circus, and a multitude of diverse projects including Glitch Jukebox, Foley, Trigger Happy, Circus Monoxide, Meow Meow and loads of others.

Tim Motzer is a guitarist, sound artist, producer, improviser, and composer. After 16 years of world touring, stunning collaborations, and over 60 albums of credits—this Philadelphia-based guitarist continues to traverse manifold territories in music and has developed a distinct textural guitar voice utilizing looping, bowing, electronics, and prepared techniques. He has collaborated with David Sylvian, Burnt Friedman, Jaki Leibezeit (Can), Ursula Rucker, King Britt, Jamaaladeen Tacuma among many others. He releases his music on his 1k Recordings imprint and webcasts sessions form his studio on 1ksessions.com.  He composes for film and video, and scores for choreographers Manfred Fischbeck, Curt Haworth, and Jung Woong Kim in the world of modern dance.
